Canada has
made a new rule for international students, allowing them to work up to 24
hours per week while studying — an increase from the previous 20-hour
limit. This decision gives foreign students, including those from Nepal
and other South Asian countries, more flexibility to manage their studies
and living expenses.
According
to the new update, which took effect on November 8, 2024, students with
a valid study permit can now work off-campus for up to 24 hours
per week during regular study sessions and full-time during academic breaks
— without needing a separate work permit.
“Off-campus
work” means any job outside the student’s college or university premises.
Meanwhile, “on-campus work” refers to jobs within the school area, where
students are also allowed to work if they are enrolled full-time at a
recognised institution.
However,
students cannot work off-campus if their study permit specifically
restricts them from doing so or if they are enrolled only in an English or
French language training program.
This change comes as Canada continues to adjust its policies for foreign students and temporary workers. The government recently announced plans to reduce the total number of new international students under its 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan, with only 155,000 new arrivals targeted — about 49% fewer than last year’s number.
