SOP
(Statement of Purpose)
A statement of purpose (SOP) is a formal essay every
student has to write for university applications. It is your only chance to
speak directly to the admissions committee and convince them. A SOP is usually
of 800 to 1200 words. A SOP must contain:
1. Who
you are academically and professionally?
2. Why
are you passionate in this specific program?
3. What
are your future plans after the course?
4. How
this course is essential for your career?
5. How
will you contribute to the department / university?
Things that must be included in a SOP
1) Opening hook (introduction): Start your SOP with a brief description about yourself and what motivated you
to take choose this field. Mention any experiences that helped you shape your
academic direction and sparked your interest. This part of SOP should create a
good impression to the committee for the essay you have written.
2) Academic background: This includes your education, academic achievements, projects, research,
thesis, skill gained and relevant coursework you developed throughout your
academic journey till date. For any study gaps, be honest with the reason with
anything that proves your interest to the program you are applying.
3) Professional / Practical Experience
(if any): Include any internships or job experience
you have undertaken. You can also list relevant projects such as workshops,
trainings, or certifications that demonstrate your skills. Make sure to briefly
mention your role, what you did, and what you learned from each experience.
4) Why This Field:
Explain why you chose this field and why it matters to you. Share when and how
you realized this is the path you want to pursue as your career. You may also
highlight how this program is more advanced or beneficial compared to similar
courses available in Nepal.

Why This
Course / University:
Mention specific professors, modules, facilities or academic resources that
align with your career goals and interests. Highlight what makes this
university stand out from others by specifying the features that genuinely
attracted you to their program. Ensure your reasons clearly reflect your
motivation and sincere interest in studying there.
6)
Why This
Country:
Explain why you chose to study in that particular country instead of Nepal.
Focus on academic excellence, career advantages, global exposure and the
quality of education. You may also briefly refer to factors such as safety,
environment or innovation that make the country appealing for you.
7)
Career
Goals:
Describe your short-term and long-term career plans and how this course will
help you achieve them. Emphasize your intention to return to Nepal after
completing your studies and contributing to the development of your field. Be
realistic, clear and confident about your future pathway.
8)
Financial
Plans:
State how your education will be funded, including your sponsors' financial
capacity and sources of income. If you have scholarships, grants, or an
education loan, include them as supporting evidence of financial readiness.
9)
Declaration:
Conclude your SOP by reaffirming your honesty, clarity, and commitment. Thank
the admissions committee for reviewing your application and express your
positive expectations regarding the outcome. Ensure the closing statement is
strong and memorable.
Things you should never do in a SOP

Do not List everything you have in
your CV
2.
Never Use clichés like “ever since I
was a child”, “from my childhood” etc.
3.
Never describe too much about your
achievement.
4.
Never lie and exaggerate things.
Keep everything shuttle and brief
5.
Make sure you haven’t done any
grammatical and spelling mistakes it’s a clear sign of rejection.
6.
Do not write more than the word
limit ( 800-1200 words)
7.
Do not use plagiarized content
directly from AI or other sources.
