Despite the growing number of universities and colleges within Nepal, a massive amount of money continues to flow abroad for education purposes.
According to the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal report published by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Sunday, travel payments surged by 18.1%, reaching Rs 223.72 billion, out of which Rs 138.48 billion was spent on education alone.
In the previous fiscal year, travel payments and education-related expenses stood at Rs 189.43 billion and Rs 125.13 billion, respectively.
The NRB also reported that the net services income deficit widened to Rs 90.94 billion in 2024/25, compared to Rs 55.86 billion the year before. Under the service account, travel income rose by 7.7% to Rs 88.66 billion, up from Rs 82.33 billion in the previous year.
